Waialae Arts Program Faculty


Mr. Samuel Chen (piano, violin) is a graduate student at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UH) where he is pursuing a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance, studying with Dr. Thomas Yee. He serves as graduate assistant to the choral department and assistant conductor of the University of Hawaii Symphony Orchestra (UHSO). Samuel won numerous piano competitions including the Music Teachers National Association Competition for Young Artists in Hawaii, UHSO Concerto Competition, Morning Music Club Scholarship Competition, and Hawaii Music Teachers Association Competition. As a conductor, Samuel has studied at the Monteux School and Music Festival and performed chamber and orchestral works on piano and violin. Samuel has also conducted in Memphis, Tennessee with Sinfonietta Memphis as a guest conductor and conducting fellow. Samuel serves as principal violinist in the UHSO and has played for the orchestra since 2016. Samuel has also served as pianist for the Chinese Baptist Church for the last decade.

Mr. Reid Ishikawa (drums, acoustic/electric/bass guitar, piano/keyboards, flute, songwriting, theory) has a bachelor of music education degree from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and also studied audio engineering at Belmont University (TN). Reid is a professional keyboardist, bass guitarist, and percussionist, and can play a wide variety of other instruments. He is an award-winning classical pianist and also enjoys composing and recording music. Reid has a love for teaching and desires to inspire and encourage students of all ages. Currently, Reid is a percussionist with the Royal Hawaiian Band.

Mrs. Cheryl Sanders (piano/voice) has a bachelor of music education/bachelor of elementary education, (piano performance) from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (Dr. Peter Corragio, instructor) and post-graduate studies at Oberlin Conservatory (OH) and Southwestern Seminary (TX) for music education/special education, vocal pedagogy and jazz piano. A former Miss Hawaii with talent awards at both the state and national levels, Cheryl currently is the music director of Waialae Baptist Church, and directs the summer S.H.I.N.E. program and Waialae Arts Program. She is a professional vocalist for Japanese wedding ceremonies and performs with the vocal trio, :The Liberty Belles”. Member: Honolulu Piano Teachers Association (HPTA), Music Teachers National Association (MTNA).

Ms. Chey Sanders (acting and media instructor) has a bachelor’s degree in theatre education, master of communications in radio/television/film, and master of arts in family counseling. She has served as a drama director for several churches, director of education for Creative Arts Theatre and School, head acting coach for Actors, Models and Talent for Christ, and acting instructor for Transformational Film Institute. In addition to her numerous directing credits, she has also directed three shows for Waialae Arts: Annie JR, Seussical JR, and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.
